PIanist Jan Lisiecki’s solo concert

The third weekend of the RĪGA JŪRMALA Music Festival will be opened by pianist Jan Lisiecki, who was named by the Gramophone magazine as the 2013 Young Artist of the Year. Music critics have called him a “child prodigy”, later “genius” and “the modern Mozart”. The musician himself perceived this as an unnecessary burden on such a young artist, creating needless, even harmful psychological pressure. But his achievements outperform even the press’ adulation - unmatched, individually bright interpretations, and a personal charisma which has opened the doors to almost all of the world’s major concert halls.

Concert programme:
Frédéric CHOPIN Nocturnes op. 55
Robert SCHUMAN 4 Nachtstücke op. 23
Maurice RAVEL Gaspard de la Nuit
Sergei RACHMANINOFF Cinq Morceaux de fantaisie op. 3
Frédéric CHOPIN Nocturne no. 1 in E minor op. 72
Frédéric CHOPIN  Scherzo no. 1 in B Minor op. 20

Saturday, August 24th at 2 p.m., Dzintari Concert Hall  (Small Hall)
Pianist Denis Kozhukhin’s solo concert
Pianist Denis Kozhukhin (1986) is one of the greatest pianists of his generation. His playing is characterised by sensitivity, engrossment in the message of the music, and crystal-clear technique. Critics, praising his playing, use words such as “captivating,” “compelling,” “fascinating”. And also powerful. Listening to him play is said to be an opportunity to experience the most deliberative, sensitive and purposeful piano playing of our time. A diamond of piano playing polished by legends, teacher Dmitri Bashkirov and mentor Daniel Barenboim.

Concert programme:
Felix MENDELSSOHN Lieder ohne Worte
Edvard GRIEG Lyric Pieces op. 12, 38, 43, 54, 62, 65
George GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue (solo version)

Saturday, August 24th at 7 p.m., Dzintari Concert Hall  (Small Hall)
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta
Pianist Murray Perahia

The meeting of three international performance legends - the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin Mehta and pianist Murray Perahia - promises to be an unforgettable musical experience. The pianist will visit Latvia for the first time, although he has inspired pianists of multiple generations through listening, admiring and imitating his interpretations. Along with Zubin Mehta and his orchestra, Perahia will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 - a work which sparkles with the spirit of improvisation, a completely free and exciting musical direction, in which silence has just as much significance as sound. Only true masters can achieve this!

Concert programme:
Felix MENDELSSOHN Lieder ohne Worte
Edvard GRIEG Lyric Pieces op. 12, 38, 43, 54, 62, 65
George GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue (solo version)

Sunday, August 25th at 2 p.m., Dzintari Concert Hall  (Small Hall)
Alexandra Conunova /Violin/ and Denis Kozhukhin /Piano/

The duet between Conunova and Kozhukhin is the magnetic attraction of two polar opposites - in Conunova’s hands, her 18th century Guarneri 'del Gesù’ instrument becomes a nuanced, deeply considered conversation leader, whose conversation partner is Kozhukhin’s piano playing - passionate, with the conviction that the instrument has no boundaries.

Concert programme:
Francis POULENC Sonata for violin and piano op. 119
Richard STRAUSS Sonata for violin and piano in E Flat Major op. 18

Sunday, August 25th at 7 p.m., Dzintari Concert Hall
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta
Pianist Yuja Wang

The meeting of the richly traditional Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducting legend Zubin Mehta, and the most unusual piano star of our era in Jūrmala will make the audience believe in miracles. Yuja Wang’s playing is characterised by “technical ease, colouristic range and sheer power has always been remarkable … but these days there is an ever-greater depth to her musicianship, drawing you into the world of each composer with compelling immediacy,” wrote the Financial Times a year ago.

The concert will feature one of the most frequently performed Sergei Rachmaninoff opuses - his Piano Concerto No. 3, known as one of the most difficult piano concertos, requiring perfect technique and musicality. They will also perform Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, which split music history into before and after.

Concert programme:
Sergei RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor op. 30
Hektor BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique op. 14
