The small two-story building (designed in 1911 by architect Ernests Pole) has experienced a variety of times and owners – it has housed a cinema, a pharmacy, a printing house and a seal workshop, a café, as well as a number of shops. Since 1944 the house is the home of Latvia Puppet Theater, which pleases the small audience and their parents with magnificent performances. It was founded and managed first by a poetess Mirdza Ķempe and stage director Jānis Žīgurs. In 1946 alongside the Latvian troupe the Russian troupe was established in Latvia Puppet theatre. Since then both troupes have been working successfully.
For centuries puppet theater has been one of the most mystical, mysterious and diverse art forms in the world. Historically puppet theater at all times has had it’s place and significant role in society.
