The Silver Skates

One of the most well-known Christmas stories that takes us to 19th century Holland: its frozen ditches, where children can skate, windmills briskly run with the winter winds, and homes with little Dutch children who are round, plump, warm, and happy. Only on the very outskirts of the town, there is a derelict, grey, old and shabby house, where little Gretel and her brother Hansel live together with their tired and worried mother and sick father. After an accident on a dam, he lost his memory and does not remember where he hid a large sum of money. The skating competition is in just a few days, and all the children have their skates ready, except for Gretel and Hansel. However, it happens to be the case that the rich kids are not all evil and stingy, and their hearts just refuse to accept the injustices of this world: that people are judged by their net worth. Miracles happen. This is a story for parents that want to give their children the gift of believing in miracles and the conviction that a good heart can overcome all obstacles, irrespective of the amount in one’s pocket. And a story for children, of course.
