Operetta Theatre presents RAIMONDS PAULS
Latvia's first multimedia jukebox musical -
Mežrozīte (The Wild Rose), an urban romance in two parts
(the jukebox musical's analogue is Mamma Mia!)
Mezrozīte is based on the melodies of Raimonds Pauls' most popular hits such as The Lantern Hour, Don't Lie to Me, Mezrozīte, Dark Blue, How Silent the Night, Undine, etc., which we love and know well, and organically integrated into the message of the newly created libretto by playwright Dace Micānes-Zālīte. The melodies, whose melodic magic we rediscover again and again, have been arranged in a glorious Broadway jazz style by the talented young jazz pianist, improviser and composer Matīss Žilinskis, who will also be at the piano in the performance as part of the instrumental ensemble. The musicians of the ensemble will also be integrated into the story.
Raimonds Pauls and Edīte Pauls Vīgnere' father Voldemārs and grandfather Ādolfs Pauls were glass blowers at the Iļģuciems glass factory. In the 1960s, almost all of Ilguciems' low-rise buildings were demolished and replaced by Soviet-era apartment blocks. Entire streets disappeared, including the small Nordeķu Street, where Paul's parents' house used to be. But the greenery of Nordeki Park still attracts... The rhythms of Riga's streets, trams and people's lives are interwoven with Eva and Raimonds' story about the longing for love, forgiveness and the challenges and choices of life and career as a woman artist.
