Concert series PERSONALLY

The special sound of the charismatic ensemble Trio Angelicus is created by a partnership of three warm timbres – a high female vocal range, the crisp sound of the flute, and the mysterious allure of the harp. On Mother’s Day, the Trio will invite the audience to feel tenderness and beauty through the melodic music of beloved composer Jānis Lūsēns enhanced with lyrics by Latvian poets.

Trio Angelicus was established in 2015 by the brilliant opera singer Elīna Šimkus (soprano), harpist of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra Ieva Šablovska, and flautist of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Sondra Lejmalniece. The repertoire of the Trio revolves around well-loved classical pieces as well as less-known opuses from the pages of Latvian and world classical music.

The latest program of the ensemble, Words of the Heart, is dedicated to the creative work of Jānis Lūsēns. It is often said that Lūsēns prefers working with longer pieces, which is evidenced by the impressive number of large-format works in his catalogue, including rock operas, musicals, and extensive opuses for vocals and symphony orchestras. However, an equally important field for the great master is related to chamber music including song cycles, as well as theater scores and other highly vivid works in so-called non-academic music. 

The program will feature Lūsēns’ instrumental works and music for the theater along with songs using the verses of brilliant Latvian poets including Māra Zālīte, Vilis Plūdonis, Kārlis Vērdiņš, Ojārs Vācietis, and Kārlis Skalbe. This concert program was created in close collaboration between the musicians and the composer, who has also written several arrangements of his previous work for the unique lineup of Trio Angelicus.
