August Strindberg’s play was the beginning of naturalism in theatre and still is a powerful story filled with passion dealing with femininity and its wild nature. At the end of the 19th century, Strindberg shocked the audiences with his daring to explore human nature’s most crude instincts that despite the age of modernity had never disappeared. Behind the exterior declarations of gender equality hid an unexpected consequence – the uncontrollable instincts of our nature led to the inability to develop a true closeness and the insincere return to the chains of patriarchal society was no solace either.

The new version of the play by writer and dramaturg Roman Dolzhanskiy received great acclaim upon its debut at Deutsches Theatre Berlin. Dailes Theatre production is based on the adaptation by Dolzhanskiy and reveals a critical view of the ways modern technology is able to manipulate human instincts.
