Nina Raine

Consent

A tragi-comedy

Translated from English by Jānis Elsbergs

In the Great Hall from 10th August, 2021

Premiere - 12th August, 2021

It is said that the contemporary British playwright Nina Raine inherited her talent from her father - contemporary British poet Craig Raine or her uncle - the outstanding Russian poet and novelist Boris Pasternak, who has received the Nobel Prize for Literature. In Nina Rein’s latest work “Consent”, the story is about a successful couple in their thirties - a book editor Kitty and her husband a promising attorney at law Edward. After welcoming their baby, Kitty and Edward manage to get closer again. Soon the fragile idyll of the couple's life is being compromised by the unresolved relationship crisis of their close family friends - lawyers Rachel and Jake - who just from outside look like a perfect family. The relationship between Kitty and Edward starts to shift when they and a prosecutor, Tim, tries to fix their friend's relationship crisis. Also Kitty starts to question Edward’s moral standards, when she learns that one victim from one of his criminal cases, doesn’t get justice. As a prosecutor in the courtroom, Kitty starts to highlight long-hidden events of the past in order to incriminate the perpetrators and obtain redress, but the line between the victim and the abuser is not at all as strict as it might seem at first.
