LNSO. TCHAIKOVSKY, GRIEG AND RACHMANINOFF

Vestards ŠIMKUS – piano

Conductor Ainārs RUBIĶIS

Programme:

  • Pyotr TCHAIKOVSKY The Tempest
  • Edward GRIEG Piano Concerto
  • Sergei RACHMANINOFF Symphony No. 2

According to Tchaikovsky himself, the composition process was blissful and calm. Yet the music illustrates a Shakespearean storm of passion, not unlike the Russian romanticist’s own experience. He was also an avid admirer of his Norwegian colleague Grieg, whose Piano Concerto combines majestic breadths, dignity, melodiousness, simplicity and overwhelming energy. Rachmaninoff’s return to the symphony genre resulted in an epitome of absolute beauty on the brink of 20th century tragedy. This lavish romantic programme was prepared by Rubiķis, who has assumed the music director’s post at the Komische Opera Berlin, but still finds the time to give the gift of music to Latvian audiences.
