Avi Avital is the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy award. The New York Times described the musician as passionate and “explosively charismatic”, while his performances are praised with applause in the world’s leading concert halls. More than 100 contemporary compositions have been written for him, letting the mandolin witness a Renaissance of its own.
In the concert, we will hear the collaboration between the sound of Avital's mandolin and Omer Avital's jazz. While Avi Avital comes from a classical tradition, the award-winning bass virtuoso and oud player, Omer Avital, is an acclaimed jazz performer and composer. Although the artists are not related and come from different musical worlds, they are united by the same last name, Moroccan origin and their childhood in Israel.
In 2017, they released their album “Avital Meets Avital”, which we will hear at Liepaja’s concert hall. In their original music, the virtuosos bring their cultural heritage into a sophisticated dialogue, drawing on the diverse influences of Moroccan folkloric and classical traditions, Israeli harmonies and Mediterranean rhythms. Classical music meets jazz, tradition meets modernism, and East meets West.
