India Meets Turkey. Traveller’s Prayer

Chamber Hall’s series PERSONALLY

Crystal clear voice and unusual musical instruments from India and Turkey. An incredible wealth of sounds and rhythms. Immense joy and deep sadness, anger and spirituality, the poetic power and prayer. This concert will take you to far-off lands, allow you to enjoy Eastern colours and experience the freshness of the soul through music.

A couple of years ago, singer and virtuoso of the Turkish musical instrument - long necked lute or saz - Emre Gültekin met the outstanding traditional duet of India - singer Malabika Brahma and instrumentalist Sanjay Khyapa. Together they formed a unique musical project “Baul Meets Saz”, combining traditional Indian and Turkish cultures.

The musical roots of the duet Malabika Brahma and Sanjay Khyapa come from the Baul culture, where musicians move from place to place and play a sacred repertoire encompassing Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, yoga and Tantra traditions. Emres Giltekina’s artistic road is also musical and spiritual. There are similarities in their repertoires, as well as a nomadic way of life, and echoes they found in their poetry and philosophies on how to live.

The longing to express and spread the unification of two ancient traditions and culture, inspires them to overcome the barriers of geo-political borders. In the summer of 2018, the trio created their own album "Namaz" ("Prayer" from Turkish), which will be performed in Latvia for the first time.

The album is a tribute to the values shared by these two cultures. They call the meaning of borders, travel, wealth, wisdom and love into question. Music critics have called this album a musical gem (Rootstime) and described it as a “magical meeting that transforms the evening, (…) an extraordinary spiritual experience, deeply mystical and pacifying in this world of borders and walls, that in fact are none.” (Fonte Esterna, MB News Italy).

Typical to the Chamber Hall series PERSONALLY - meeting with the musicians after the concert, for a chance to enjoy conversations in an informal atmosphere with a cup of coffee from the sponsor "Andrito Kafijas Grauzdētava".
