Exile Meditations Riga Vocal Quartet

Chamber Hall series PERSONALLY

Riga Vocal Quartet, consisting of the best ensemble singers in Latvia, will perform "Exile Meditations" by the British contemporary composer Gabriel Jackson, which combines Latvian poetry with manuscripts from Middle Eastern refugees, as well as "The Little Match Girl Passion" by the famous American composer David Lang.

“The Little Match Girl Passion”, composed by Lang, received the prestigious American Pulitzer Prize in 2008. In it, Lang combines the text of St. Matthew's Passion with "The Little Match Girl", the famous tale by Hans Christian Andersen, thus creating a multidimensional temporary and spiritual dialogue in a unique way.

The meditatively painful theme will be continued by Jackson's multi-part piece for mixed voices and percussion instruments. “Exile Meditations”, a piece he wrote specially for Riga Vocal Quartet in 2017. The piece explores the human experience of refugees, combining manuscripts of World War II Latvian exile writers and poetry of Middle Eastern refugees.

Riga Vocal Quartet was founded in 2017 by the American conductor and singer Christopher Walsh Sinka, who currently lives and works in Riga. The Quartet consists of current and former singers of Latvian Radio Choir and the State Academic choir "Latvija". In July 2017, the Quartet played the world premiere of Gabriel Jackson's "Exile Meditations" at the closing concert of the European Latvian Union Summer Conference with great success, and in April this year, at the prestigious festival Passiontide at Merton.
