Amsterdamas Karaliskais Concertgebouw orķestris, JVLMA orķestris

In celebration of the Latvian centenary, the listeners of the Born in Latvia concert cycle will be given a unique opportunity to meet one of the three best orchestras in the world – the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. On 8 November on the stage of the Latvian National Opera lead by the conductor Philippe Herreweghe the orchestra will perform together with the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music Symphony orchestra. The soloist will be one of the most noteworthy modern pianists – the internationally acclaimed Yefim Bronfman.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the best orchestras in the world. The famous Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons was the principal conductor of the orchestra from 2004 to 2015. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded in 1888. On the year of its centenary (1988) it officially received the distinction “Royal”. The orchestra’s home is one of the best concert halls in the world – the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The queen of the Netherlands is the patroness of the orchestra.

As a part of the project Side by Sidein each country the orchestra performs in the concert is opened by performing with the music academy symphony orchestra of that country.

Philippe Herreweghe is one of today’s top conductors mainly due to his studies of materials on historical instruments and interpretation, which have allowed him to reveal the very essence of music and have given his musical signature a great deal of personal character.

Philippe Herreweghe was born in Belgium in 1947. He pursued his musical education in the conservatorium studying piano and organ. Around the same time he also began his conducting career. In 1970 he founded the baroque ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent. He is regularly invited to conduct the leading orchestras of the world – the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the New York Orchestra of St. Luke's etc.

In the Latvian National opera the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will perform Carl Maria von Weber’s overture for the opera Oberon together with the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music Symphony orchestra, Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, and Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Piano concerto No. 4 with the soloist Yefim Bronfman

Internationally recognized as one of todays most acclaimed and admired pianists, Yefim Bronfman stands among a handful of artists regularly sought by festivals, orchestras, conductors and recital series. His commanding technique, power and exceptional lyrical gifts are consistently acknowledged by the press and audiences alike. Summer engagements have regularly taken him to the major festivals of Europe and the US. He has also given numerous solo recitals in the leading halls of North America, Europe and the Far East, including an acclaimed debut at the Carnegie Hall in 1989. Bronfman has been nominated for 6 GRAMMY® Awards, winning in 1997 with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their recording of the three Bartok Piano Concerti.

Born in Latvia is a Latvian centenary event sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia. As a part of the concert cycle, the audiences are invited to hear both the efforts of Latvia’s young talents, as well as internationally acclaimed and globally sought-after musical stars performing on the year of centenary in different concert halls across Latvia.
