The Orchestra RIGA, the official orchestra of the Riga City Council, was founded in 1972. The orchestra presents academic music performances as well as concerts of popular music. For its outstanding year-round performance in 2017 Orchestra RIGA received the Grand Music Award – the highest form of state recognition in the field of music in Latviaand obtained the Public Sympathy Award at the Latvian Grand Music Award in 2016. Besides that, its musical and cultural contribution has acknowledged with the annual Latvian TV “Kilograms kultūras” award in 2012. Each spring Orchestra RIGA has presented the Spring Festival WINDSTREAM, which has acquired great recognition among the residents and quests of Riga. Since 2015 the orchestra’s chief conductor and artistic director is Valdis Butāns.
