Programme:
Arturs Maskats The Song of the Baltics for solo singers, choir, and orchestra (new work)
Jean Sibelius Symphony no. 2
Maskats is celebrating his anniversary this year, and his new work, dedicated
to Latvia’s centennial, is based on the concept of the three Baltic states’ poetry
and fate. Vocal solo by Lithuanian representative, the amazing soprano Vida Miknevičiūte; Latvia’s delegate is the heroic Aleksandrs Antoņenko, and Estonia is
represented by Mari Kalkun whose voice is as fragrant as a Midsummer meadow.
The programme also includes Sibelius’s popular, ingenious Symphony no. 2 –
the role of a herald of national ideas is occasionally attributed to this work.
