Serge Rachmaninoff’s music itself is the infinite horizon of the Russian
landscape and the oceanic abyss of preternatural emotion. His Piano
Concerto no. 2 is the composer’s resurrection after a lengthy creative crisis –
Rachmaninoff composes again, full of masculine restraint, but his heavy
heart is impossible to heal, and it is most clearly audible in the indescribable
beauty of the second movement.
