The Dailes Theatre has the most exceptional history of direction in the Latvian culture. For 40 years since its creation in 1920, the theatre’s style was shaped by the legendary director Eduards Smiļģis.
Its functionalist architecture eventually became the most significant work in the outstanding career of the distinguished Latvian architect Marta Staņa.
The idea of the theatre’s creation was born in the minds of two geniuses of the Latvian culture – director Eduards Smiļģis and poet Rainis. In the Dailes Theatre, the reality of art has always prevailed over the reality of life. Its symbol – a burning flame – complements and echoes the theatre’s creative moto: Clarity. Simplicity. Passion.
