Vakarā – Premiere Academic Orchestra B-Sharp

Academic Orchestra “B-Sharp“ the brand new string orchestra of Riga will perform its première on the 6th of December at 20.00h in the Aula of the Rīgas Stradiņa Universitāte (Dzirciema iela 16, Rīga) centered around the theme „Vakarā”.

B-Sharp is composed of and organized by students and recent academic graduates of various universities in Riga. It is conducted by Artūrs Gailis, fresh alumnus of conducting at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. Our goal is simply to make music together and enjoy ourselves along the way!

On the program are Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings (1880) alongside the contemporary piece Karlsons’ Evening Prayer (1999). Both pieces are centered around our colorful theme “In the Evening/Vakarā”.
Evening Prayer is a very intimate piece - as the title might already indicate - full of unexpected harmonies, touching melodies and magical ambience. Juris Karlsons, the composer, felt a strong urge to write this music during an eventful time in his life, emphasizing that only the unique language of music was able to describe his emotions. This music fits perfectly with the Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky, since a “Serenade” is performed music for a beloved person at night.
