The Ring of Riga. Musical Performance

Great Hall

The series of concert performances “The Ring of Latvia”, which told, sung, played and danced the features characteristic to each region of Latvia in four conceptually different forms, gained wide appreciation of the audience and provided the impulse for Conductor Sigvards Kļava to create a new concert performance about the kin of Riga. The performance will be about them – the grand and the romantic, the creators of the unique face of Riga, the ones to endure, to suffer and to grieve over its destroyed glory and the lost men, the ones to experience the storms of history, and the ones to dream of the perfect city of the future.

This story told through poetry, music, dance and theatre is about Them! About the city that has already been geographically assigned two different faces by the River Daugava flowing through it, allowing these two faces or shores to have their own distinct stories – about the diverse Riga of Vācietis/Maskats and Čaks/Stabulnieks. And as a uniting, symbolic element – bridges of time and fantasy, on which we shall meet to experience heartfelt and also deeply personal stories.

The poetry lines of Ojārs Vācietis and Aleksandrs Čaks will come to life with music by Arturs Maskats and Uldis Stabulnieks, revealing the bright lights, sounds and smells of the centre of Riga, as well as the romantic atmosphere of the narrow, silent streets of Pārdaugava. The story about the diverse Riga in poetry, music and theatre language will be told by Andris Keišs, Jānis Strazdiņš, the Latvian Radio Choir and instrumental band. Conductor Sigvards Kļava, Director Viesturs Kairišs.

The programme includes long-established, as well as brand new compositions by Arturs Maskats with lyrics by Ojārs Vācietis – “White Concert Time” (Balto koncertu laiks), “The Old Riga Destiny Song” (Vecās Rīgas Likteņdziesma), “Rain Romance” (Lietus romance), “Something Silently” (Kaut ko klusiņām), “In Lime Flower” (Liepziedā), “You Can Cry, You Can Laugh” (Varat raudāt varat smiet) and others. The boulevard lyrics will be revealed in the songs by Uldis Stabulnieks with lyrics by Aleksandrs Čaks – “To Riga” (Rīgai), “Marijas Street” (Marijas iela), “About the Tram Tracks” (Par tramvaja sliedēm), “Swedish Gate Romance” (Zviedru vārtu romance), “Old, Silver Riga” (Vecā, sirmā Rīga) and others. The special mood of Riga in the 50s and 60s in the musical performance will be highlighted by the women’s vocal ensemble “Rīga”.
