Pianist Denis Kozhukhin’s solo concert

Saturday, August 24th at 2 p.m., Dzintari Concert Hall  (Small Hall)
Pianist Denis Kozhukhin’s solo concert

Pianist Denis Kozhukhin (1986) is one of the greatest pianists of his generation. His playing is characterised by sensitivity, engrossment in the message of the music, and crystal-clear technique. Critics, praising his playing, use words such as “captivating,” “compelling,” “fascinating”. And also powerful. Listening to him play is said to be an opportunity to experience the most deliberative, sensitive and purposeful piano playing of our time. A diamond of piano playing polished by legends, teacher Dmitri Bashkirov and mentor Daniel Barenboim.

Concert programme:
Felix MENDELSSOHN Lieder ohne Worte
Edvard GRIEG Lyric Pieces op. 12, 38, 43, 54, 62, 65
George GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue (solo version)

Kozhukhin plays with the conviction that his instrument has no limits. With one condition: you have to know what you want to get out of your piano.

A stable cornerstone for his very successful and auspicious career was his 1st place victory at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2010 at the age of 23. Kozhukhin has played in Europe and America’s most significant concert halls and festivals (Wigmore and Carnegie Halls, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Wiener Musikverein, Munich’s Hercules Hall, London’s International Piano Series, the festivals at Lucerne and Verbier, and many others). He has performed both with excellent orchestras and conductors, and with soloists and chamber ensembles (the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London’s Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra, the leading orchestras in Austria, France, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Norway, conductors Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, Gianandrea Noseda, Vassily Sinaisky, and Paavo Järvi, the Jerusalem Quartet, Leonidas Kavakos, Jörg Widmann and others). In the 2018/2019 season alone, Kozhukhin worked for the first time with ten “rediscovered” orchestras.

Kozhukhin is also a passionate chamber musician, having worked with Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Vadim Repin, Leonidas Kavakos, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, and many others.
He was born in Nizhny Novgorod to a family of musicians, and his first lessons at the age of five were with his mother, and then at the Balakirev Music School. Between 2000 and 2007, Kozhukhin studied at the Reina Sofía School Of Music in Madrid with Dmitri Bashkirov and Claudio Martínez Mehner. On finishing school as the best student in the year, the Queen of Spain herself presented Kozhukhin with his diploma. In recent years his most significant mentor has been Daniel Barenboim.
