Shostakovich’s life is an insoluble mystery – the rampant vivacity of youth, the deep sorrow of maturity, the placid lucidity of old age. This programme includes two contrasting works: an immensely talented young man’s audacious, witty piano concerto (a perfect fit for Plamena Mangova’s fiery temperament) and Symphony no. 4, which was stowed away in a drawer for many years – a monumental canvas for the drama of life, composed by a man who is still young but has suffered a heavy professional blow.
