Lonely genius Mussorgsky wanders through an exhibition, looks at his friend Viktor Hartmann’s drawings, and a jumble of sounds emerge in the composer’s head to turn into small musical compositions later – a Christmas tree ornament with a nutcracker painted on the side, a yoke of oxen, unhatched chicks, marketplace gossip, creepy catacombs, a bronze clock in the shape of a witch’s house, and the heroic city gates.
