Sinfonietta Rīga
Conductor Normunds Šnē

Programme:
Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 and Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83

Led by conductor Normunds Šnē, Sinfonietta Rīga closes the season with Johannes Brahms’ Second Symphony and Second Piano Concerto. After reviewing the score for his Symphony No. 2, Brahms’ friend Theodor Billroth wrote: “It is filled with ripples of water, azure of the sky, sunlight and cool green shade.” This most uplifting and lightest of Brahms’ symphonies has also been dubbed the Pastoral Symphony. Along with it, the imposing, magnificent Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring Argentinian soloist Nelson Goerner. The potential of the gifted pianist was noticed by his compatriot Martha Argerich while he was still a student, and later they have performed together, playing piano four hands. Nelson Goerner is considered to be one of the most discreet performers, but nevertheless his soloist’s career is impressive. The pianist’s musical recordings have received high praise, and his performance has been compared to a full moon’s light because of its clarity and poeticism.
