LAF. PIANO WORKS DEBUSSY. VOETVOLK. LISBETH GRUWEZ & CLAIRE CHEVALLIER

Viewers of the 2018 Liepāja Art Forum will remember the Belgian dancer Lisbeth Gruwez and her ability to capture the audience’s steady attention – during that performance, Gruwez revealed her delicate, masterfully perfected skill of blending movement with music by dancing Bob Dylan songs. This year, Lisbeth Gruwez returns to Liepāja with pianist Claire Chevallier, and this time all attention is directed towards the piano aquarelles of French impressionist Claude Debussy. This is the exact word the dancer uses to unlock and veneer the phonetic writing of Debussy’s music: “Piano Works Debussy is an aquarelle. Think about the airiness of colours that flow in one another, dry for a while, and become moistened again to establish new connections. Debussy’s music irrigates the dance and continually shakes up the material.”

This is what has been said about Lisbeth Gruwez’s performances: “Her dancing is as informal, and poetic and intimate as the music itself.” “She dissolves the imaginary barrier between artist and audience.”

In this performance, Gruwez and Chevallier do not express a rigid truth. They arouse imagination and fantasy.
