The 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival. MARIA MENDES & MICHAEL PIPOQUINHA

It is for the 28th time that Liepāja International Stars Festival will present to the audience unforgettable moments of classical, jazz, modern and vocal music in interpretation of outstanding musicians. In five concerts given in the Great Hall of “GREAT AMBER” and in the Jurgelaitis Chamber Hall, it will feature renowned conductors Gintaras Rinkevicius, Andris Veismanis, and Atvars Lakstīgala, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and Latvian Radio Big Band, singers Maija Kovaļevska and Maria Mendes, virtuosos Michael Pipoquinha  un Karel Dohnal, pianists Armands Ābols and Wilhem Latchoumia, a premiere of Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Concerto for Saxophone with Oskars Petrauskis as soloist, the Riga Chamber Choir AVE SOL male group, and Orests Silabriedis. Supported by: the Ministry of Culture of the Latvian Republic, the State Culture Capital Foundation and Liepāja city.

Maria Mendes is a Portugese diva with a wide range of musical interests – she feels perfectly in jazz, tenderly sings popular music and can turn her clear strong voice into a melancholic one in fadu. Mendes has performed at the legendary New York Blue Note Jazz Club and has been cheered by the audience at Montreux Jazz Festival. All About Jazz writes: “Mendes clearly shows that she does not have to prove anything.”

 Michael Pipoquinha, who has been in Latvia several times, already as a teenager charmed thousands of followers of his video channel around the world by his technical virtuosity. Presently the young musician is out for the world fame. Michael’s performance is rich in colourful Brazilian rhythms, unique slapping technique and ferocious grooves.  The Standard Bank Jazz Festival has called him a sensational bassist.

The audience will hear Portugese and Brazilian music, enjoy Maria and Michael’s duo and programme Tribute to Jaco dedicated to the legendary American bassist Jaco Pastorius, which will be played by Michael and Latvian Radio Big Band.
