Gregoriskie dziedājumi. Carmina

After the fascinating festive concert, which at the beginning of this year brought the audience to the Great Hall of Liepaja Concert Hall, “Gregorian chants” returns to “Great Amber”. This time with a different programme –  the vocal group “Schola Cantorum Riga” will be joined by the talented domestic composer Raimonds Tiguls with modern sounds of keyboard instruments.

The concert will feature Medieval chants of Christmas time – Gregorian carol, ragweed anthems and several samples of early polyphony. The arrangements incorporate many elements of world music, creating a dialogue between the ancient melodies and the modern means of expression. Already in the Middle Ages, songs favoured by people were never stiff and set, but were in constant interaction with different musical traditions that existed side by side. In this programme the vocal group “Schola Cantorum Riga”, Raimonds Tiguls (keyboard instruments), Guntars Prānis (hurdy-gurdy) and Andis Klučnieks (pipes) will look for ways, in which the ancient chants can be performed today using distinct modern shapes of sounds and instruments that are close and understandable for the modern person.

Vocal group “Schola Cantorum Riga”

The vocal group “Schola Cantorum Riga” was founded in 1995 as a special ensemble for the authentic interpretation of early music, especially Gregorian chant, and has evolved into a group with a very wide variety of repertoires. One of its main goals is to play music at high artistic and professional levels, which is reflected in the group's numerous concerts in Latvia and abroad, as well as on regular recordings. Now "Schola Cantorum Riga" mainly plays medieval music and focuses on the work of contemporary Latvian composers.

The group's singers are professional musicians and music students who love the early music and wish to play it according to the latest findings in the field of authentic interpretation of early music.

The recording "Rīgas mesa" received the Annual Latvian Music Recording Award and the ensemble has been nominated for the Latvian Grand Music Award for remarkable concert activity in 2016.
