Marco Beasley. Southern Italian Songs. The world in an Amber / Italy

The world-famous interpreter of baroque music, Italian Marco Beasley, will perform in Liepaja presenting lyrical melodies and dances of the early Italian baroque music. In the “Southern Italian Songs” programme artists will follow the footsteps of the Italian free spirit - nature, old wives tales, rituals, words of ancient poets. In the songs of the 17th century we will hear of love from the past, the pain of loss and happiness of a new friendship. Next to tenor Marco Beasley we will hear the sounds of a lute, baroque guitar and tambourine, accompanied by the passionate southern dances of Lieselotte Volckaert.

Temperament and charming heartache are the keywords of this program!

After renaissance music studies at the University of Bologna (Italy), Marco Beasley had a quickly-growing brilliant concert career in the most prestigious concert halls in the world - from Mozarteum in Salzburg to Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, from the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome to Lincoln Center in New York.

His personality as a singer, actor and writer reflects the carefree soul of Naples, the joy of life, the creation of music, and the desire to acquaint with the world of poetry and literature.

His studies of vocal music composing and the clarity of the lyrics have brought Beasley ever-greater fame. The Dutch Association of Theatres and Concert Halls (Dutch VSCD) nominated the talented artist as the best performer of 2009.

Beasley can be proud of many recordings. Most of his recordings have been created with the Accordone ensemble , but in 2014 he left the band to begin a more personal and independent musical path. In 2013, his record Il Racconto di Mezzanotte was released, in which the singing more than ever has become an incarnate, intimate story told by the singer. This and his next recordings –  Le Strade del Cuore (2016) and Catarì, Maggio, L'Ammore (2017) – were produced by Beasley himself and were only sold at the concert venues.

Stefano Rocco studied lute at the Conservatoire of Verona and obtained a degree in Music and Performing Arts Disciplines at the University of Bologna. His busy concert schedule is very varied and he regularly performs in major international festivals. In 1984, he co-founded, together with Marco Beasley and Guido Morini, the ensemble Accordone, and performed with them for many years. However, he has also performed with many other groups, including I Barocchisti di Lugano (directed by D. Fasolis), the Baroque Orchestra, the Oberon ensemble, the Accademia degli Astrusi, Concertino Amarilli, and together with Fabio Accurso, Armonia delle Sfere.

Fabio Accurso has performed with numerous Early Music ensembles, including Accordone, Laboratorio '600, Janas, Al Qantarah, Sarband and Dramsam, and as a lutenist he has participated in many recordings with these ensembles.

He has performed with Marco Beasley for many years, and his concert activity has led him to participate in many international festivals across  Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia.

As a soloist he has recorded the complete works by Renaissance lutenist Hyerolamo Ferrutio and in 2005 he released a CD of Domenico Bianchini’s complete works.

Leonardo Massa was born in Naples. He graduated in Cello under S. Altobelli and M. Flaxsman and specialised in baroque cello and performance practice with C. Coen, G. Nasillo and others. He subsequently obtained a Master’s Degree in Baroque and Renaissance Music at the University of Potenza. Massa has been the winner of several international competitions.  

Currently he is the artistic director of Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana  and also professor of Cello at the I.C. "Socrates - Mallardo" and at the Mousikè Study Center.

He performs regularly with several ensembles and his discography numbers over one-hundred recordings.

Vito De Lorenzi has taught introductory courses of frame drum at Conservatoire Tito Schipa in Lecce, and has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Teresa De Sio, Raiz, Giovanni Sollima, Rolf Lislevand and Marco Beasley.  He has particpated in a number of musical projects, including Pizzica Sinfonica (Maestro Milesi) and Arteteka (Ivan Fedele). In addition he has worked with many orchestras including RAI Italian Television in Turin, and Santa Cecilia in Rome, as well as with  ensembles including Notte della Taranta, La confraternita de’musici and Accordone. De Lorenzi graduated in Non-European Music Traditions and specialised in Indian music at A. Pedrollo Conservatoire of Vicenza.

Lieselotte Volckaert is a Belgian dancer and researcher. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Translation Studies (Italian, French, Dutch) she has specialized in historical dance with Barbara Sparti, Lieven Baert, Bruna Gondoni, Cecilia Grácio Moura, Sigrid T’Hooft, and Dorothée Wortelboer. Her current academic research focuses on the work of Fabritio Caroso, a sixteenth century dancing master. Her passion for the music and dance of the South of Italy encouraged her to study the practice of this tradition, both as a dancer and a singer, and she was invited by Marco Beasley as a solo dancer in two of his current concert programmes.

Please follow the rules of “Great Amber”, in order to ensure that the cultural event is enjoyable for every visitor.
Concert Hall “Great Amber” already awaits its visitors an hour before the event. 

Tickets for the events at the Concert Hall must be purchased by each visitor, considering that adult-age events and activities do not allow children under the age of 5. Parents (accompanying persons) with children aged 5 to 10 years old are asked to purchase tickets in the stalls and/or near the hallway door, so that if the child needs to leave the hall during the event, it can be done as discreetly as possible, without disturbing other visitors at the event.

For visitors in wheelchairs and their companions we offer special seats in the stalls by prior arrangement. Special tickets can only be reserved and purchased at the Info centre at “Great Amber” by phone +371 63424555, e-mail [email protected] 
The Information centre employee - the cashier - will inform the Client Service Department of the concert hall, which will ensure the availability of the seats. When arriving at the event, please contact the Information Centre, whose staff will help you reach the necessary floor and seat. The building has a panoramic elevator which allows visitors with mobility impairments to get to the necessary building floor.

Please arrive at the Concert Hall on time - after the 3rd call, entry to the Hall is stopped, as the event will begin. 
Visitors of the Concert Hall are required to switch off their mobile phones, players and other electronic devices before entering the Hall.
