A unique art event yet unheard in Latvia will be presented to the Liepāja Art Forum by the world-renowned Latvian Radio Choir and French conductor Roland Hayrabedian. They invite you to an Egyptian funerary ritual captured in French composer Zad Moultaka’s sound based on the Book of the Dead.

Lebanese-born artist and composer Zad Moultaka comes from a background of Arab theater. He moved to Paris at a young age to study the fundamentals of Western European composition. The voluminous oratorio for sixteen voices and electronica was inspired by the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which is considered to be the oldest written testament of our civilization. Ancient Egyptians believed that another world, one of gods, existed parallel to their own, and gods were superior to humans. People’s lives on earth were merely part of an eternal journey that continued in the hereafter – in effortless joy and wealth.

The voluminous opus was ordered and premiered by the French a cappella ensemble Musicatreize and its conductor Roland Hayrabedian, who will embark on the journey to Osiris and Isis’ kingdom with a group of soloists from the Latvian Radio Choir this time.

The journey will be started off by Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s 1966 cosmically vibrational and atmospheric Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light), based on a Roman Catholic requiem mass and Ligeti’s masterfully crafter 16-part micropolyphony.

At 6 p.m., we invite you to a pre-concert conversation with musicologist Dāvis Enģelis in the 2nd floor gallery.

The program features:

György Ligeti Lux Aeterna (1966)

Zad Moultaka Khenkhenou (2018)
