In Sinfonietta Rīga we enjoy new discoveries just as much as we savour traditions, avidly looking for commonalities and pondering about musical lineages. This is evident in our season opening concert programme. Along with the classic Joseph Haydn's Symphony in D major – the delightfully romantic and sparkling Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn – who once re-discovered the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. This performance of Baroque grand master's Double Violin Concerto has allowed to fulfil a long-cherished wish of the brilliant violinist Vadim Gluzman – to share the stage with a current student of his former teacher, professor Romāns Šnē. Similar relationships link composers Andris Dzenītis and Pēteris Plakidis, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year – Dzenīts' explosively energetic opus Euphoria is a dedication to his teacher Plakidis.
