Italy’s largest Baroque music ensemble, Coin du Roi, plays authentic instruments and reads music directly from scores. This allows it to take an in-depth look at the historical context of the opuses, also seeking to cast bridges between traditions and innovations. Latvian audiences met this unique orchestra, which brings together young and energetic ancient music specialists, last year, and this year Coin du Roi is returning to the Ancient Music Festival with three different programmes. They will all be conducted by Christian Frattima, a former child prodigy and virtuoso violinist who is the artistic director and chief conductor of Coin du Roi. Christian also finds time to compose music, work with other orchestras, record music, public research about the history of music, and write various articles about artistic processes. The orchestra’s first appearance at the Small Guild will fill the old building with outstanding music by the great masters of Baroque music. These opuses were composed for ceremonial aspects of royal courts and dedicated to representatives of such courts, including the rulers of England, France and Prussia.
