For the first time this year, the Saxophonia Festival will feature a meeting between the outstanding Canadian Latvian Jānis Steprāns and the Great Music Prize nominee, the Latvian Radio Big Band.

Jānis Steprāns is a jazz saxophonist, composer and teacher, perhaps the most famous Latvian jazz musician outside of Latvia.  Born in Montreal in 1958, Jānis studied in Boston and was soon appearing with musicians and ensembles such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, Slide Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Paquito d'Rivera, Randy Brecker and John Pizzarelli.  Today he is an associate professor at Laval University in Quebec.

At the festival concert, Jānis will appear with the rhythm group of the Big Band and with the entire Big Band to perform his own compositions -- One for VedadyUn Autre Orignal, and others.
